Watermarks Project – January 2025

Here are 31 “Watermarks” paintings that I created during January 2025 — one for each day.

They are painted in a sketchbook filled with lightweight, multi-media paper, so the paper can’t take a lot of water before it starts to buckle. I chose this lightweight paper on purpose to keep me loose and gestural, with a specific challenge to simplify and distill so I could follow the path suggested by the confluence of water and pigment.

Many of these little paintings failed or contain flaws, but I engaged in this project to embrace a daily creative ritual rather that to expect results. I wanted to mark each day’s passing with a creative activity, so please look at these paintings as a project, rather than think of them individually. That said, the image gallery does allow you to look at each one (if viewing on a computer, click on an image to open).

Every day spent with brush in hand and engaged in painting is valuable for me and deserves to be documented.
