Since 2012, I’ve been exploring the overlooked scenes in the small town of Wardensville, W.Va. The detail from this painting, “Flaming Out,” is one example of the many small details and vignettes that are endlessly fascinating to me. The juxtaposition of the bright red plant against the cool, deep shadows, all framed with the strong horizontals and verticals of the porch and yard fence — it was a strong image that made me turn around and drive back to it so I could snap some reference photos. The gallery below shares a few additional examples representing favorite paintings from this series.
